Canonical Id is a unique id that is verbose to easily identify an object. The canonical id will resemble the content title but won't allow spaces or special characters. When your content library grows, it can be extremely frustrating remembering what video id #339402 is. It is much easier to reference TripToFrance2010. Canonical Ids are also necessary for SEO, so you can provide metadata rich identifiers in the URL.
